Review Film Aladdin 2019
“Aladdin
2019” Movie Review
By: Irliany
Admittedly, the 1992
version of Aladdin's movie became one of Disney's beloved films ever. As the proof, no one can forget
the figure of Princess Jasmine, Aladdin, Genie, and the song "A Whole New
World" up to the present. The studio was clearly dedicated
to matching the original, right to the songs, dance moves and dialogue. It
deviates in terms of plot and, of course, has replaced the magnificent Robin
Williams with the touch of modern Will Smith as the Genie. Guy Ritchie should be proud and must
be brave enough to face the challenges of making a live action remake of the
pop culture product as the director.
Following the story of
Aladdin (Mena Massaoud), a great thief who lives alone with his monkey, Abu, fell in love with Princess
Jasmine (Naomi Scott) of Agrabah after meeting by chance on the market. Because caught up in stealing, the Prime Minister of Agrabah, Jafar, took him to a cave filled up with gold. He also found a
magic lamp containing a genie that could grant three requests. Will Aladdin succeed
to make
Princess Jasmine fall in love?
Fresh Musical Drama with Magical Shades
Without intending to overdo it,
the film Aladdin is one of Disney's best live actions, after Beauty and the
Beast (2017). The film offers lively performances such as fantasy adventures in
musical drama and crunchy jokes. Richie is not only made the audience feel
nostalgic for the 1992 version of the film, but also realized that this was a
new, modern Aladdin film and worthy of big appreciation. Unfortunately, stereotypical portrayals of
Arabic culture such as presented on the song "Arabian Nights", gives
a less connotation. Even though it feels fresh, towards the end of the story it
feels like a formula and a bit anticlimactic. Unlike the animated movie version,
Ritchie chose to raise a society conflict rather than describing a tribe or
race. On the contrary, the Aladdin movie
highlights the question of how sincerely we behave towards our human fellow?
Boost Story with Scoring and Visual
One of the attractions of
princess Disney films is about song and dance. In order to give a new color,
Ritchie and Alan Menken, the composers of Disney songs, arranged those elements to be
more sophisticated and can be accepted by the modern audience. This is quite
successful in boosting the story through its classic songs which were also
successfully raised and predicted to hit again. Moreover, the song "A
Whole New World" which is highly expected and eagerly awaited is very
climax compared to other songs and good enough to make a goosebumps skin.
One of the things beyond
expectations are placed in some scenes in Aladdin's movie that look like scenes
in Bollywood movies. It caused by the rousing dance features with lively
costumes. The production designs and costumes are made in high luxury, both in
the treasure cave and in Agarabah neighborhood, especially the castle. Every
single frame in the movie are full of glittering visual details.
Made Laugh Out loud, Amazed, then Dazzled
This classic animation
beautifully presented in conjunction with laughter and wonderstruck scene with
no pause. The touch of modern will click the audience by each character’s
behavior that makes laugh out loud, especially Genie.
This movie can
be stated quite successful and put over to bring the 80’s or 90’s generation
back to the past through the songs that have a unique way of pulling into your
brain. Even with its shortcomings, the good aspects of Aladdin are worth to watch and gain big appreciation which made a
pleasant blockbuster for the audience. As long as this positive thing
continues, Disney will succeed with the next live action such as Lion King's
live action that will up in theaters for less than two months. This is a great
way to arouse your nostalgia for what's to come.
